Chapter 15

Sam flew through the vast psionic space beyond the altar. Part of him understood he didn’t really have any location in this place, that he could be anywhere he wanted to be. Or everywhere. But his mind was used to being somewhere, and for now, it wasn’t worth the extra mental effort to convince his mind to change.

He had a job to do.

Gus was, perhaps, the obvious starting point. He felt he should at least apologize about the titan.

There was an angry red knot tangled in the core of the cool blue web of the hive. It had to be Gus. Crimson tendrils spread from him, inflaming nodes in a spreading network that must be the Ascendancy. Sam wafted closer to it, taking his time. It wasn’t a conversation he was exactly eager to have.

He wondered how communication actually worked in a space like this. What the special effects were, so to speak. Intuitively, he understood how the tangle of light that was Sam would make psionic contact with the red web of Gus, mind to mind. But in reality, they were miles apart, and Sam had no idea what effect that contact would have on Gus. Would he hear a booming voice? Whispers in his head? Or would Sam just be planting thoughts directly in Gus’s mind?

Was it even okay to be contacting him like this? Was it a violation of privacy or something? The psionic space of the altar wasn’t as intimate as the star field where he and Journey had seen each other’s naked souls, but still. Maybe it would be better if he just backed off.

No.

He was avoiding the confrontation, and it was time to man up.

With a final plunge, he closed the distance between himself and Gus.

“Hey, um, Gus.” It wasn’t really speech in the classic sense, but just as his brain was used to being somewhere, his thoughts were used to being in words. “Look, this is weird, but I just wanted to tell you … well, a couple things, I guess. If you can hear me. Can you hear me?”

The Gus-presence rustled, uneasy, but it was hard to tell whether it was reacting to him or to whatever Gus was experiencing in real life. Sam got up his courage and decided to get the hard part over with.

“I think I broke your titan. I’m really sorry. I know you said to leave it alone, but, well, Thor’s getting worse, and I couldn’t think of any other way to get in touch with you. But it all went wrong, and now I don’t know how we’re going to get him out.”

He felt some response from Gus, and for a moment he grew excited. It was working. Except Gus was blocking him out, toughening his outer barrier. Sam pressed on.

“Anyway, I thought if there’s any way you can help, now’s the time. Like, for old time’s sake. Wingmen. You know?”

Still there was no clear response, and the bond he was trying to form with Gus failed to take hold.
